Why the Land Rover LR3 Deserves More Attention
Old Land Rovers are a great option for serious off-roading adventures.
Childhood Inspiration: A Love for Land Rovers
As a child, I was bitten by the bug. Every day, I saw a silver Land Rover Discovery II on my way home from school. I couldn’t resist its appeal. The boxy roof with a stepped design and the spare tire all suggested adventure. But I grew older. I’d heard enough horror tales about old Land Rovers that I was able to get rid of any desire. It was only two weeks ago that I had a genuine desire for a Land Rover.
Testing the Land Rover LR3 on the Trails

I was attending a Firestone event. It was a three-day trip through the Northern Cascades off-road trails, where we tested a range of over landers wearing Destination-line Tires. Land Rovers were warned to me. My coworker Lucas who attended the event last year, as well as the event organizer Davis, both noted that the LR3s are the most charming. I was expecting them to be beautiful, cool and captivating. They are two of the most impressive (mostly stock) overlanding cars I’ve ever driven.
Why the LR3 Stands Out
While many companies produced off-road vehicles during the early 2000s era, very few built trucks that had the combination of off road capability, hauling ability, and the space required for proper endurance off the grid.

Comparing the LR3 to Other Off-Road Vehicles
Modifying a 4Runner or F-150 is possible, but the only factory options under $20,000 include the 100-Series Land Cruiser/Lexus LX and Lexus GX470. The Land Rover range is also available. Since any Toyota truck that is priced below $20,000 with 4WD tends to be 200,000 miles old, I have been looking for an alternative.
Reliability and Cost Considerations
Land Rovers are not as reliable as Toyotas. Toyotas are not magic, but they are also subject to the same entropy which will ultimately consume us all.
The Cost Factor: Toyota vs Land Rover
It doesn’t matter if the truck is 20 years old. The parts will still break if it is used hard. The cost of repairs can quickly mount up. Maintenance costs are high for rare, heavy, expensive SUVs. The LR3 is no exception. Land Rovers will always be more expensive and less reliable to maintain. You won’t be getting the equivalent Toyota for the same amount of money. You get an older Toyota that has more miles, and is possibly owned by someone who believes in the truck’s invincibility so much they don’t do anything but change oil.
For around $10,000, it is easy to find an LR3 car with 100,000+ miles. If you’re smart, you can find a pavement-prince owned by an Orange County rich family who took care of all the repairs at the dealership.
The LR3 in Real-World Adventures
The Toyota will also need some work. If the Land Rover needs more work, you have an extra $10,000 to do it. You can also break things when you’ve got the budget for repairs.
Driving the LR3 in Tough Conditions
Land Rover Discoveries have been used in the real world for decades.
The Technical Superiority of the LR3
My journey began in a black Land Rover with Firestone Destination Mt2 mud-terrain Tires wrapped around white Defender steelies from the current generation. The Land Rover had a controller aftermarket for the LR3 standard air suspension. It also had a full-size replacement mount on the rear gate, a roof tent, and upgraded rubber.
How the LR3 Handles Off-Road Terrain
For off-road Lovers, the four-wheel independent suspension can be sacrilegious because of its limited articulation, which makes it easier to raise a wheel. The LR3 has the ability to extend an air spring in order to gain traction, or to activate a “special extraction height” mode.
Smart Engineering: Differential Locks and Traction Control
When a wheel is raised, the system will lock the rear locking differential or the center locking differential if it is available. This allows the power to be directed where it should go. It will prod the brakes for the open front differential to direct the torque to the most useful destination.
Performance on Wet and Muddy Trails
The next morning, we tested that theory. Rain had surprised us. It soaked our coats through, pummeled our tents, and turned the idyllic Washington Forest trail into a mudslide.
Confidence in the LR3’s Capabilities
Despite tight trails that were rocky, muddy, and tight, the LR3 sailed without drama. The cabin’s narrow and high dimensions provide not only excellent cargo space but also a neat enough silhouette for forest trails.
Comparing the LR3 to Other Off-Road Vehicles
I cannot say if the XTs outperform the competition without having back-to-back experiences. But I can tell you that they would never be a limiting factor in my life.
Switching to Other Vehicles for Comparison
After swapping from the LR3 I moved onto an FJ Cruiser. Then, I switched to a Bronco. After our scheduled wheeling was complete, we made a detour and went to Moon Rocks. It looks more Moab-like than Washington. I hopped in a Colorado ZR2 Bison.
Why the LR3 Excels in Long Expeditions
In the tradition of an adventure, we ate more than we could eat. What was supposed to be a quick remark turned into a long, slow slog along the most difficult trail we had yet encountered.

Comfort and Practicality in the LR3
This is what makes a truck a friend, and not just a toy. The LR3 was built to be used. The LR3 has a large sleeping area, a huge cargo area, impressive hauling capabilies, and a split folding tailgate.
