Toyota’s $10,000 Pickup Truck Redefines Basic Transportation

The Toyota IMV 0 is an affordable, no-frills pickup designed for tough, everyday work in developing markets. It offers simple, reliable transportation without expensive features, making it ideal for practical use.

It is the Tacoma pickup is built in America to serve Americans and Canadians in order to avoid taxes like the “chicken tax,” but 181 other countries across the world have access to a Hilux pickup. It’s similar to our Tacoma but is more simple.

You’ll recognize it from news footage of aid to the poor or conflict zones. It appears that it’s become a bit fancy and, at around $15,200 to begin the price, it was priced out of certain markets. It’s the IMV 0 intends to fill the low-cost spot under it. It will compete with Hilux with a targeted starting at $10,000. It debuted in 2023 at the Japan Mobility Show, wearing the cool Land Cruiser 70 Series style. Following its debut at the Tokyo event, we went to take the car for a spin.

Back to Basics

Toyota has reviewed every aspect of this truck with an eye towards cost efficiency and delivering only what’s required and nothing less than.

 Toyota IMV

The team behind the development even invited upfitters from all over the world to share their thoughts on ways to improve the efficiency of the cab and chassis to be ready for aftermarket constructions. Here are some of the modifications, and what’s not included or what’s excluded:

  • All flat glass for the side, windshield and the rear window
  • Flatbed that has no sides, but with a only a few improvements like the model with a drop-side that we tested
  • There is no anti-lock brake, however a proportioning valve that is load-sensitive is the norm and ABS is available as an option (Hilux’s Standard ABS makes it difficult for installers to fit heavier-duty rear axles)
  • There are no airbags (these are also optionally offered or standard in certain markets)
  • There are no armrests, only pockets in the doors which double as pulls for doors.
  • Crank windows
  • The interior is filled with rubber and plastic
  • Hilux control arm, coil-sprung front and leaf-sprung rear chassis that can be upgraded to more GVWR

Gas or Diesel 4-Cylinder Power

Specific powertrain specifications have not been revealed, however we’re assuming that our vehicle was equipped with the Hilux’s entry-level 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine that produces 139 horsepower as well as a manual 5-speed transmission. (We’re betting that the diesel is the 2.4-liter 150 horsepower Hilux model, though a variety of engines could be available.)

How Does it Drive?

Although it did have ABS and airbags the truck was far lighter than its size suggested, which is why it gained speed much faster than was would be expected. The long shifter’s movement evoked the full-size Yank trucks of the past but its dependable accuracy did not. The bluff flat-glass windscreen generates some wind noise when driving at highway speeds, however the engine and road noise produced through its Bridgestone Duravis R611 commercial vehicle tires (215/65R16 for ample sidewall) will keep your ears from focusing on it.

Toyota IMV

We didn’t have a chance to put the IMV 0 in any curves, but who knows what a potential buyer will do? The brakes felt solid and confidently in a position to smuggle more weight. However, in the current world of new $50,000 median prices for automobiles within the U.S., it was extremely refreshing to drive simple, unpretentious transport device. While driving this truck is a great way to be aware of the way it can help people from all over the globe to complete the work required to earn money, create an environment, aid others, etc. It’s an entirely different kind of “lifestyle vehicle” than we’re used to.

High Utility

If you have the right equipment, the flat-bed that had a drop-side could be equipped with an open tailgate and no latches. Simply move the pin along the other side of the bed to close or open it. The bed is equipped with an incline to assist in getting to the top. It’s a notch that is stamped and then turned to form the 3-inch-thick steel which forms side walls of the bed.

There are numerous flat spaces in which things can be fixed, as well as spots to put roof racks along both sides of the vehicle. The goal for the long term is that Toyota is to minimize the profits when selling the truck’s basic model and increase the possibility for upgrades. Two vehicles displayed at the Japan Mobility Show depicted a straight-up, workhorse laden with weight.

There was also one which was equipped with a Cafe that was open to the air. The computer-generated pictures showed it operating as an overlanding camper and also as a race aid among other things. It is a guarantee of the fact that this third dimension will be able to bring an IMV zero in the field, performing more challenging and heavy tasks than the ones listed here.

Dream On

Toyota’s IMV 0 is a delightful small illustration of what a standard truck could be and should. It’s the reason that alone, I’m sad to see that will never be seen in American streets. At the very least, not for the next 25 years. A truck like this is incompatible with not just US regulations, but also with those of the American marketplace for consumers.

 Toyota IMV

But, I do hope that the ongoing growth of the Maverick can be a signal for other companies that there’s room for a smaller, less expensive truck. Maybe even something similar to this. The Maverick is a great machine, but as good however it can be isn’t the kind of machine you would call a robust machine. It doesn’t have the basic purpose that the IMV zero embodies in every way. I’d like to have Toyota launch an enlightened, smaller vehicle like it to American market, perhaps a sub-Tacoma, with an IMV-0 goals. After having read this far, I’m betting that you feel the same as I do.

When and How Much?

Do not bet in Hilux’s IMV 0 name to make production. There’s too much goodwill and heritage put into Hilux. Some speculate that Hilux Champ could be the moniker for production. However, it’s scheduled to be delivered to ASEAN markets beginning in 2025. Prices will be in markets that permit the elimination of ABS and airbags in 2023 at $10,000. In markets that are more tightly regulated, you can anticipate paying more than $5,500 less than the current Hilux. Be on the lookout for Hilux models during CNN International broadcast footage starting and ending.
